Dengue trap control meeting Wednesday

Hawaii Dengue Fever Awareness will be hosting a community meeting from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Benedict’s/Painted Church Hall in Honaunau with mosquito control expert Mike Banfield, owner of SpringStar, a leader in mosquito-control research and manufacturing.

Banfield donated 500 ovitraps to help in the control effort against dengue. Banfield will instuct people how to deploy ovitraps at home and how people can make their own ovitraps.

Bring your questions about dengue and how to protect yourself from mosquitoes. Banfield has more than 20 years of experience with mosquito control, trap design and manufacturing.

Seniors group plans lawn games

The Kailua-Kona Seniors meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hale Halawai for lawn games. Members will participate in bocce, croquet and hillbilly golf. January birthdays will also be celebrated.

Hospice of Kona volunteer training offered

Hospice of Kona is looking for caring and reliable community members to be trained to help with services to patients, in its office, Memory Lane thrift shop and in the community.

Hospice of Kona is offering a free volunteer training from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Jan. 19, 20. Both days are mandatory to become a certified hospice volunteer.

Land security for Ka‘u Coffee farmers discussed

I Ola Na Aina Momona will hold a strategy meeting to discuss legal structures for holding property or partnerships with Hawaiian Islands Land Trust and donor recruitment and funding strategies. The meeting is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Pahala Plantation House, 96-1184 Ohia St.

Hawaii Energy offers chance to win Energy Star refrigerator

Hawaii Energy, a ratepayer-funded energy conservation and efficiency program is offering residents a chance to win an Energy Star refrigerator. One resident from each county, Hawaii, Honolulu and Maui, will be randomly selected to win a white top-freezer, 18-cubic feet unit (estimated $650 value).

Libraries closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day

All public libraries will be closed on Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Libraries normally closed on Mondays will also be closed on Jan. 19, including Kailua-Kona Public Library and Thelma Parker Memorial Public Library.

A regular meeting of the South Kohala Traffic Safety Committee is planned at 4 p.m. today in the conference room of the civic center in Waimea.

Harrison teaching meditation program

“Teachings of Awakening With Gavin Harrison” meets from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday at 73-4548 Mahi St., Kailua-Kona. Sitting and walking meditation and talk are planned. Groups are nondenominational. Medical marijuana dispensary license applications online

The Hawaii State Department of Health Medical Marijuana Dispensary License application is now available online at mmjdisp.ehawaii.gov. Applications must be submitted online and will only be accepted during the application period from 8 a.m. today to 4:30 p.m. Jan. 29.

All information on dispensary license requirements is posted at health.hawaii.gov/medicalmarijuana/.

The $5,000 application fee in the form of a certified check or cashier’s check payable to the State of Hawaii Department of Health, must be delivered or mailed by certified mail, return receipt requested, to: Department of Health, Medical Marijuana Dispensary Licensing, Room 337, 601 Kamokila Blvd., Kapolei, HI 96707.

The medical marijuana dispensary law allows DOH to award two dispensary licenses for Hawaii County.

DOH expects to select and announce licensees by April 15. A dispensary may begin dispensing medical marijuana no sooner than July 15, with the approval of the department.
